Antarctica has no permanent human residents, but it is home to around 5 million penguins! It’s almost entirely covered by an ice cap, in places nearly 5 km thick (almost 3 miles). It's made of up to 90% of the world’s freshwater – so much that if it melted, it could raise the worldwide sea level by up to 58 m (190 feet). You’ll find the South Pole in Antarctica, 1235 km (765 miles) from the nearest coast.
